MathCounts is a nationwide middle school enrichment program designed to stimulate excellence in mathematics and problem solving.  In class we learn concepts, short cuts, use of a scientific calculator and share solution ideas to problems worked at home (3-5 each day).  In February, winners of the class competition go to the regional competition.  Top regional teams go to the state competition.  Our team has gone to state four times!  Most importantly, MathCounts makes math fun even for students who hate math.  Students must be at grade level to participate.

Homeschooling offers the opportunity for real education rather than mere “teaching to the test.” As students approach the college years, however, their ability to perform on standardized tests grows in importance. This course focuses on preparing students for the Scholastic Achievement Test, a key qualifier for college admissions. Students will learn the logical patterns behind standardized test questions along with necessary strategies that can help increase their test scores. The course goes beyond mere test preparation by focusing on study skills, learning styles, and other important components designed to prepare students to get the most from the college experience.

Understanding the Times Philosophy & World View Class:  Grades 9-12th

Teacher:  Meredith Curtis (Blanche Russell)

Like a pair of glasses, your worldview is the lens through which you see the world. Our culture is the scene of clashing worldviews: Humanism, Post-Modernism, Socialism, Muslim, New Age, and Christian. You might be surprised how much we are all affected by the worldviews presented in movies, museums, and textbooks. What does the Bible have to say about psychology, sociology, government, law, religion, money, biology, and philosophy? We will explore Biblical and non-biblical worldviews with Scripture, Understanding the Times, class discussions, videos, and role-playing. This class will involve reading Understanding the Times (a hefty book) and participating in class.

Class fee:  $70.00 (includes books) sibling fee $45.00 (share books with sibling)

Introductory Web Design:   Grades:  7-12

Teacher:  Laura Nolette

Despite all the computer programs and web sites which help people make web pages there is so much more that can be done when one knows the code. This class will start at the very beginning of the basics of web design. There is no need for prior computer programming experience. We will discuss everything needed to make a multi-page web site using XHTML. We will also be discussing W3C standards, Cascading Style Sheets, and design considerations at an age appropriate level. Each student MUST bring a laptop computer which runs a simple text editor like Notepad and a web browser like Internet Explorer to every class. (Don’t be afraid of old machines.) This is a very small class so priority will be given to high school students. Students wishing to repeat the class from last year will get last priority.
